Susan Newton-Rhodes is a Managing Director at Lafayette Square and has dedicated the last 25 years of her career in community and economic development finance to moving capital into underserved communities throughout the country. Prior to joining Lafayette, Susan served as a Director at Summit Consulting heading the Mission Oriented Investments team with primary responsibility in the implementation of the U.S. Department of Treasury’s Community Development Financial Institutions Fund Bond Guarantee Program. Over the prior eight years she led the origination and underwriting team in the review and approval of over $1.8 billion in long-term capital committed to the CDFI industry.
Susan started her career in commercial banking managing a $1B national real estate loan portfolio comprised primarily of non-performing multi-family properties located throughout the east coast. In the mid-90’s, she led Enterprise Housing and Financial Services as president, establishing one of the first certified CDFIs, which she and her team grew to one of the largest national CDFI’s in the country. After leaving Enterprise, Susan founded POD Consulting, LLC where she worked with financial institutions, philanthropy and governmental entities to educate and grow investments into underserved communities throughout the country.
A graduate of the University of Kansas, Susan holds a BS in Business Administration and an MBA in Finance and Marketing from the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She serves on numerous non-profit boards, previously as the president of the Junior League of Washington and most recently as President of Radcliffe Creek School, which serves children with learning differences in Chestertown, MD. Ms. Newton-Rhodes grew up in Kansas City and remains a faithful Kansas Jayhawk basketball fan while living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland with her husband and four children.
